Castellani Art Museum Exhibition Explores Theme of "Raw Vision" Provided by Castellani Art Museum |
| |
A new exhibition from the Castellani Art Museum’s permanent collection features artists who borrow from a wide range of sources, from folklore, mysticism, and subconscious fantasy to child art and graffiti, in search of a more immediate and intuitive expression. Raw Vision: Selections from the Permanent Collection, featuring works by Picasso, Miro, Tamayo, Basquiat and Appel is on view through June 5, 2010.
Marian Granfield, the museum’s coordinator of education, explains that some of the artists in the exhibition explored these themes as a “liberating alternative to the cerebral formalism that began with Cubism and continued up through the post-Mondrian Constructivist era of the late 1930s. For others it was a response to the traditional values of a mainstream society that many felt contributed to two world wars. And still for others, it was an opportunity to maintain the human element in art, underscoring the integration of art and life.”
“Whether these artists intentionally appropriated the originality of untutored art as transformative forces in their own work, or simply created art that achieves a child-like quality, these unfettered and, even playful, artworks are a delight to children who appreciate their simplicity and directness.” Granfield added. The artworks are placed a bit lower on the gallery walls for the viewing pleasure of younger audiences and an accompanying activity sheet provides families with guides for looking at and talking about these exuberant artistic expressions.
Art Express Family Workshops taking place at the museum on March 20 and 27 will also focus on artworks from the Raw Vision exhibition.
