| |
In one of the toughest job markets, many recent college graduates are still looking for work and as time marches on, the competition gets tougher. Bottomless Closet NYC is here to offer some tips to help you land a job. After all, the local non-profit organization that provides disadvantaged women with business professional clothing, career skills and image coaching, has been helping women get back into the workforce for over 10 years.
The Bottomless Closet “Workforce”, a group of dedicated volunteers with a strong background in human resources, offers tips to help new graduates who are still on the job hunt:
Prepare your resume, cover letter, and references
- Resume: Check and double check your spelling. Format your work experience in reverse chronological order. Keep the typeface, margins, headings, and abbreviations consistent.
- Cover letter: Be concise and to the point, while making sure your letter stands out from the rest.
- References: Be prepared to select three to five good, solid references that can speak knowledgably about your professional and personal attributes.
Organize your job search
Make telephone calls to gather contacts you have received from referrals or job listings. Dedicate the necessary time for your career search.
Prepare for the interview: You never get a second chance to make a good first impression.
- Wear a business suit or jacket in a dark or neutral color. Avoid short hemlines, plunging necklines, sandals, sneakers, tight-fitting skirts, and flashy jewelry.
- Research the company, job, and the position of the person with whom you will be interviewing.
- Review your resume inside and out.
- Create a one-minute description that includes key points about yourself, including pertinent personal information, your education, work experience, skills, and why you would succeed at the job.
- Plan more than enough time for getting to the location of interview. In fact, arrive early!
Interview follow up: Be sure to leave a positive, lasting impression by writing a thank you note to the potential employer within two days of your interview.
