Wedding Day: Who pays for what? By: Jonathan Bille |
| |
Perhaps the biggest misconception about the wedding day is that it is exclusively funded by the bride’s family, and although her family is responsible for a lot of the costs, the groom and others also have some costs that they assume. Here’s a breakdown on wedding costs and who pays for what.
The Bride’s Family:
· The reception cost (excluding the liquor) but including the venue, food, and cake.
· The wedding gown
· The flowers
· The Photographer
· The invitations
· Transportation costs for the bridal party
The Groom’s Family:
· The Musical entertainment (Band or DJ)
· The Rehearsal Dinner
· The liquor for the reception dinner
The Bride:
· Gifts for her bridesmaids
The Groom:
· The Brides engagement ring and both wedding rings
· The bride’s bouquet, corsages for the mothers and boutonnieres
· The marriage license
· The fee for the ceremony’s officiate
· Gifts for the groomsman
· The honeymoon
Bridesmaids and Groomsman:
· Tuxedo or dress
· The bridal shower and bachelor party
· Travel costs and accommodation expenses
Although we don’t like to think about that side of it, weddings cost a lot of money, and these costs, if not kept in check, can quickly rise out of control. Making sure costs are distributed can really help soften the impact that any one family has to assume.
It should be noted that the preceding are the generally accepted breakdown of cost, but not every wedding needs to follow these without variation. Sometimes one family may voluntarily take on the responsibility for more costs than the other family. In such cases it is best for the two families to get together to discuss cost and the assuming of responsibilities.
Unfortunately this can also be a point of major conflict between families. Always remember to compromise and to remember that the wedding isn’t about who pays for what or how big or small the wedding is but rather its about the joining of two people, so with all that may come up, it’s important not to loose sight of that.
