Study: Exercise During Pregnancy Now Recommended
(East Lansing, MI) -- Moderate exercise during pregnancy could help moms-to-be by reducing the rate of complications. A Michigan State University professor says new research shows "dramatic change" in the thinking on pregnancy and exercise. James Pivarnik of East Lansing, Michigan, says, quote, "research now shows physical activity can not only improve the health of the mother but also provide potential long-term benefits for the child." New guidelines unveiled by the Department of Health and Human Services call for women to get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity a week during pregnancy and after giving birth. The guidelines say women should avoid activity that involves lying on the back after the first three months of pregnancy and activities with high risk of falling or abdominal trauma. |
