Study To Determine If Genetic Testing Changes Behavior
(Los Angeles, CA) -- A first of it's kind study will be carried out by San Diego-based Scripps Translational Science Institute to see if genetic testing actually changes the behavior of people. The research will use a saliva sample from people over 18 years of age to analyze their risk for more than 20 genetic conditions such as obesity, heart disease, and some forms of cancer that may be affected by lifestyle changes. It will look at changes in behavior over two decades to determine of such testing can actually help people become healthier. In a statement, Scripps reseachers admit there are questions on whether or not genome testing is ready for widespread use, as regulators have questioned the accuracy of the results. The institute adds there will be safeguards put in place to ensure that the privacy rights of those who take part are protected.
