Hendrix Experience Drummer Mitch Mitchell Passes Away
The last surviving member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience has died. The "Oregonian" newspaper reports that legendary drummer Mitch Mitchell was found dead in his room at Portland, Oregon's Benson Hotel early Wednesday morning. The Multnomah County Medical Examiner reports that the veteran rocker appeared to die of natural causes. Mitchell was 61. In addition to his time with the noted '60s power trio, Mitchell also performed with Hendrix at Woodstock, and was part of Hendrix's "Cry of Love" band. Most recently Mitchell had participated in the Experience Hendrix trek, a tribute tour honoring the work of the guitar icon. With Mitchell's death, all three member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience have passed away. Bassist Noel Redding died at his home in Ireland in May 2003 at the age of 57. His death was also determined to from natural causes. Hendrix died on September 18th, 1970, in London. The official cause of his death was inhalation of vomit following barbiturate intoxication. While some believed it to be suicide and there were rumors of a suicide note, nothing tangible ever turned up.
