Dutch Study Links Smoking, Drinking To Throat And Stomach Cancers
(London) -- A study done by Dutch researchers offers yet another indication that drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes can be unhealthy. Its findings show drinking and smoking may raise a person's risk for certain common forms of throat and stomach cancer. One of the researchers said current smokers have the highest risk, while the cancer risk for former smokers is intermediate compared to people who have never smoked. Over 120-thousand Dutch residents were tracked for more than two decades in the study. People who drank four glasses of alcohol daily had five times the risk of developing a common form of throat cancer as opposed to non-drinkers. Smoking was linked to a higher risk of three common forms of throat and stomach cancer. |
