Oakland, California Voters Consider Marijuana Tax
(Oakland, CA) -- The City of Oakland, California may work its way out of the red with a tax on the green leaf. Voters consider a ballot measure this month to tax medical marijuana sales. The proposed one-point-eight percent levy could net the city 400-thousand dollars a year. The four legal cannabis sellers in the city reported 20-million dollars in sales last year. Dispensary owners fully support the tax, saying it's a move closer to legitimizing the drug. In 1996, California voters approved Proposition-215, also known as the Compassionate Use Act. The law allows cultivation and sale of marijuana for patients with a doctor's prescription.< |
