Sebelius Confronts Health Insurance Companies
(Washington, DC) -- U.S. Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius [[ seh-BEE-lee-us ]] is confronting big health insurance companies. Speaking at a convention of industry executives, Sebelius said increasing numbers of people are dropping their health insurance because they can no longer afford it. She asked the health insurers to put themselves in the shoes of their customers. Secretary Sebelius pressed the companies to give up some short-term profits in exchange for long-term reform. She said insurers have the choice to either keep spending millions of dollars to fight healthcare reform and keep the status quo, which she said will increase their profits, or take that money to give Americans some relief. Sebelius pressured insurance companies to spend their money to work on strengthening the parts of healthcare reform legislation they do like rather than trying to kill it. She said while short-term insurance profits may be tempered, by getting on board the companies will help to create a sustainable system which will be better for the public and better for the insurers. |
