Obama To Commemorate ADA Anniversary Today
(Washington, DC) -- Today marks the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. President Obama will host an event marking the date on the South Lawn of the White House this evening. Signed into law by then-President George H. W. Bush on July 26th, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act protects people with physical or mental disabilities in employment and other walks of life. In September 2008, President George Bush signed amendments to the law that strengthened protections. Meanwhile, Rhode Island Representative James Langevin, who is a quadriplegic, will preside over the U.S. House for the first time on Monday. The 46-year-old Democrat will use a mechanical lift to reach the speaker's rostrum. |
